A Sneak Peek at the January 2005 Issue
EDITORS COMMENTS: Gosh, another great holiday season has come and gone. I hope Santa was good to you and your families. Now tell the truth, did you make any New Years Resolutions? How did you do with last year’s? Your Editorial Committee held a conference call last week to layout ideas for the magazine for 2005. The first new item for 2005 is “coated paper.” This should give you a new “feel” and definitely better color separation with the printing process. I hope you’ll like it. We are in the process of developing monthly “themes” for each issue. This will assist in directing the types of articles I will be looking for as well as directing our advertisers somewhat each month. We are listening to your desires and what you told us in the member’s survey we did this last year. There was a major response to wanting more technical/biological articles. We have responded by dropping our “Ask the Guide” column to be replaced with “Ask the Biologist.” Members will be able to submit their questions to our technical staff or they may ask specific state issue questions to be answered by your local state DNR biologists. So start sending your questions. This month we have five feature articles plus Bob JenningsMuskie Tales. Tony Gray talks about What Do We Do Now. An interesting article about the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Hoosier Muskie Hunters. Russ Hornbeck talks about Community Spirit of the Flatlanders Chapter, something all chapters should be considering. Another article by Will Dykstra entitled Muskie Hotels. Will is a young man with great aspirations and a couple of 50+ inch muskies. Besides he’s a product of Colorado. Interested in fishing one of the newest muskie hot spots? Brian Kaiser has some tips on fishing Mill Lacs muskies. Finally, Tim Mead is offering his knowledge on fishing Kentucky’s Buckhorn Lake. February is our M.I. Ladies edition and we threw in a teaser by Patricia Strutz entitled, Gal’s Tourney Pictorial. We have some great lady writers lined up for the February issue. Wait until you see what Juris Ozols has put together for a “centerfold.” I know you’ll be impressed. Of course, Jimmy Bunch has his regular big fish stories. This month he’s really going to tweak your reading enjoyment. Realizing that this is the first issue of the new year, I feel it only appropriate to thank my staff for all of their contribution over the last year. Juris Ozols for all his excellent photography, wonderful covers, members photo contest and making me look good. Scott Cherek for his work in handling the magazine advertising and helping us make some return which helps keep member dues in line. Jim Bunch for his regular monthly columns and all the statistics that we so dearly cherish. Richard Gross who always manages to get us to crack a smile with his outstanding cartoons. Rob ert Jennings for his humor and stories, mostly fiction along the muskie trail. To my Guide Panel:
All of these folks have given their best-kept secrets to make the rest of us better muskie fisherpersons. Ed Jackson who can retrieve an article from his archive and keep me backed-up on M.I. history, facts, or anything else I may need. Then there are a few behind the scenes personalities that make me look a whole lot better. Those gentlemen are David Cates, my legal advisor and spell checker. Mike Moschell who also spell checks and does some re-writing to make sense out of some of the articles I receive. I cannot say enough about my good friends at Sunray Printing Solutions, especially Ross Rieke and John Windschitl, and the staff of printers, secretaries, most of whom I don’t know but without them we wouldn’t have a magazine. And then there are all of the writers who have blessed me with their submissions this year to bring you some excitement and interest in muskie fishing. To all of you Happy New Year and may 2005 bring us all new hopes and aspirations, accomplishments and another swell year. Thank you all for each of your contributions to make our MUSKIE Magazine a success.
